Link to a Facebook post about the Erie Canal. The NYS Canal Corporation would like to remove all of the trees along 130 miles of the Canal that are bounded by raised embankment, mostly in Western NY.

This is despite the fact that there is no evidence that trees have ever caused any stability problems in the 200 year history of the Canal. The Canal seeps and the Canal Corporation uses the existence of these seeps to fear-monger that the structure is failing. But the original engineering was very clear that seeps WERE EXPECTED - they had to engineer a water supply to counteract this leakage!

The public has been overwhelmingly opposed to this novel management plan, which has many serious consequences for residents, tourists, taxpayers, and the natural world. #ErieCanalwayTrail #rochesterny
