3 weeks in, I’d say the world without Twitter feels slightly but palpably less weird.
There’s a pleasant lull in the days that wasn’t there before. Like the silence is more silent.
This happened with Facebook and drinking too: My mind recoils from the UX as from a hot flame

@virginiaheffernan the last time I was on FB, I saw a picture posted by the then girlfriend of my still husband of a "family portrait" taken by a professional photographer of the two of them and my children, posing like the Beatles crossing Abbey Road.

Never having been on Twitter, I don't know what to think about Mastadon. It's fun to communicate with someone I admire, like you, but I kind of prefer Reddit, which is largely impersonal and pleasantly anarchic.

@littleshebear that picture. Holy smokes. I have been there - seen a photo just like that, with my 2 kids, and almost nothing is worse. So I’m hugely in solidarity there. I hope you’ll stay on Masto!
@virginiaheffernan That sounds lovely. Congratulations.
@virginiaheffernan Did you entirely abstain from tweeting? If so did you do it gradually or abruptly? I find it difficult to delete my account as a huge subset of my followers are overseas and have not figured out the mechanics of this #mastodon platform yet.
@YemeniFatima I did not delete my account. Just the app from my phone. And to be honest I have tweeted over the last weeks but down maybe 90%? How about you?
@virginiaheffernan Just a couple of days here. I feel like I moved into nice suburbia from a crowded city but still commute to Twitter every day.
@YemeniFatima yeah well put—it’s a little bit boring out here and sometimes I want to head back. But I like the space to think.
@virginiaheffernan
I feel like I'm missing out on news and information but fighting the urge to login. I deleted the app from my phone when TFG was reinstated.
@Serion @virginiaheffernan I got the itch yesterday, and tried logging back on. Luckily, I signed completely out on all devices, and don’t remember the password. 🤷‍♂️
@DistrictDave01
Probability not a bad thing. Resist the urge! 🙂
@virginiaheffernan
@virginiaheffernan But saner, for me. I could no longer handle the anger rushes I got from heartless and mindless idiots.
@globalme same here!
@virginiaheffernan @globalme I mean the machine was making sure we would get those anger rushes. like being in an abusive relationship with someone with multiple-personality disorder...
@virginiaheffernan Better, actually. The algorithm there makes your timeline boring. I'm seeing posts from people here I haven't seen on Twitter for years!
@virginiaheffernan I fell off the wagon! but part of recovery is relapse
