๐Ÿ“ˆ IMHO the most underreported #MastoAdmin success story of the #TwitterMigration has to be that of chaos.social.

๐Ÿ’ก The maturity & insight shown by @leah & @rixx has been a real delight to see. Read the story below of their wisdom: Close registrations, focus the content, focus on #community.

Growth is not a core value in the #Fediverse. The big tech mindset of growth-at-any-cost is proven to be not sustainable, & it won't survive here, either.

@downey @leah @rixx it shocks me to read stories from other instances about being overwhelmed. How many users are you going to accept before you close admission should be a day 1 decision.

And if they didn't, as soon as things exploded, they should have bring that topic for discussion.

It is easy to reopen and accept more people later on, but not the other way around.

@sergi Rapid growth is a very seductive offer for geek egos

But success in online communities is not a tech challenge, it's a human one

@downey It's understandable that they needed to take action to reduce the size of the instance but it's a bit sad too. It sounds like most people I follow on chaos.social will need to move, now that "politics" isn't welcome any more.

@nemobis Nothing in that blog post says anything about a rule that politics isn't welcome topic.
@downey Yes, the blog post buries the lede quite a bit.
@nemobis In fact, it specifically says it IS welcome.

@downey I couldn't find a sentence where politics is said to be welcome. Either way, that doesn't seem to be how it's interpreted so far by the little corner of chaos.social that I follow. I don't have an opinion on the new rules as such, I'll need to see how they play out in practice.

The best possible outcome is probably that the chaos.social people unhappy with the new rules create new instances and spread the culture of the place in a more sustainable way. I already saw some offspring.
