This is very much true. Abney Park's lead singer talked about how much they get from things like Pandora and Spotify, and it's damn near literal pennies. If you go to their web page and buy direct, it helps them a hell of a lot more.

Lara@signalstation Awesome! I hated Spotify, then I loved it, now I'm right in-between. It's so damn useful and on the other hand such a shitshow for the artists...
I was in the same boat. Really liked it for discovery of new music.
I found, though, that Tidal is a practically identical product and has a better rep, so I made the switch.

Sammy 🐾 @signalstation also, for artists who might not sell their music on a DRM-free digital platform, just pirate their music and buy at least a single piece of merch from them, and they’ll probably have made more money than you’d ever make them by listening on Spotify..

I try to do it when I really like a small artist's stuff but a lot of the time I just can't afford it

@signalstation I cannot burn a CD, if a music is only on TIDAL / Spotify. Well, OK, maybe I could, but I'm quite proud that my collection finally only contains music I officially bought, not just copied...
