In the grand tradition of being a coward in GOP Congressional leadership, McCarthy made excuses for Trump, just as Paul Ryan did for Trump after the Charlottesville riots, when he said, “I think he made comments that were much more morally ambiguous, much more confusing.”

Make them own their decisions. They try doing this magic trick that somehow they're different and separate from Trump when they think he hurts their political future but then they still support him. Journalists need to make Republicans account for and own their actions.

But Molly I have to say one reason I personally think McCarthy and other Republicans get away with it is because journalists let Republicans get away for being accountable for so many of their own actions.

No articles were written showing that my congressman's justification for objecting was completely false. None have asked him to provide evidence for his claim laws in states were unconstitutionally changed. Some of that is an issue of access. Journalists need to do more
