I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.

Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

@leo  https://twit.tv/clubtwit would be a good start as you get a lot in return for some đź’¸

@danvanmoll @leo is it federated? If not it may as well be Club Penguin.
TWiT.social

The official Mastodon of the TWiT Podcast Network

Mastodon hosted on twit.social

@danvanmoll @leo I mean club twit. It seems like a subscription site if I want to see anything.

Which is fine, really. Just be honest.

@olavf @leo twit.social is the instance belonging to Club Twit. You subscribe on Club Twit, get commercial free podcasts, access to a pretty cool Discord etc. but most of all you support TWiT.tv. I’m not sure if you currently need to be a Club Twit member to register on the instance.
@danvanmoll @leo you have to $ubscribe, which again I'm 100% okay with, just be up front about it.
@olavf @leo as I said, I wasn’t sure. When I joined a sub wasn’t necessary (even though I already was a subscriber). It probably was changed in order to not overload the server. However, twit.social is directed to people listening to the twit.tv podcasts.

@danvanmoll @leo twit.social is the federated gateway to twit.tv and that's perfectly okay. And content creators that want to move their profiles there is okay too. But ultimately that content is pay per view and that's okay too.

Just be honest ~ hey we've got this awesome platform service that you can monetize your works

Again, that's okay. Just be honest.

@olavf @leo Would you please stop that”just be honest”-nonsense? I’m not hiding anything, you just don’t seem to understand.

twit.tv is a collection of podcast shows founded by Leo Laporte & team something like 16 years ago. All podcasts are free, supported via ad breaks. Other podcasts use e.g Patreon to ask their audience for support, Leo has Club Twit. In return you get access to a private Discord, ad-free versions of all podcasts - and (recently) access to twit.social.

@danvanmoll it's more likely they are geared towards content creators but love consumers. Consumers are profit, no matter where they are

And consider this ~ they've schooled you, and maybe me. Here we are talking about a for-profit federated instance with an open front. They're not being honest; they want you there to get you to $ubscribe, It's not your fault as this wil be common for the next 6+ months
