Some #mosstodon from the #DennistonPlateau in #Aotearoa. Impermeable rock, high rainfall, and shallow acidic soil created Denniston's unique ecosystem inhabited by numerous endemic and undescribed species of plants and invertebrates.
@photosbyann beautiful! There's a forest up Taranaki maunga that looks a little like this. It's called the Goblin Forest.
@StephM Thanks for reminding me about the Goblin Forest. A photographer friend made some incredible photos there recently and I hope to have the chance at some point.
@photosbyann I hope you do too! It's very eerie and qhite wonderful.
@StephM what’s the best time of year for a visit?
@photosbyann probably not the middle of winter because of snow preventing road access (maybe), and high summer may have an impact on water levels of Dawson Falls, so any time outside that?

Goblin Forest and Wilkies Pools | Taranaki, New Zealand

Follow the path into the Goblin Forest and let your imagination run wild. Goblins, elves, hobbits - they'd all be at home here.

@StephM I suspected something like this might be the case, but so much better to rely on local knowledge. Thank you Steph!

@photosbyann
Living in the Pacific Northwest, I sometimes feel I have an unfair advantage on the moss front - then see photos from down under.

Gorgeous! And I do need to visit eventually...

@coprolite9000 but if you visit you will be flying -- and flying means co2 emissions -- so why not enjoy looking at eachother's photos instead!

Have you seen https://takethejump.org

I'm inspired to write a post about it. Will do that tomorrow

Take the Jump

Take the Jump

@photosbyann
Very good point.

(I hadn't seen Take the Jump before - but I'm heartened to realise that I've made several of the described shifts already, and have been poking at the others...)

So yep - definitely post photos!

@coprolite9000 I’m delighted you checked this out and discovered you were already doing a lot. I’m involved with a local network called the #NelsonTasman ClimateForum and we’re about to start work on a #TakeTheJump campaign in #aotearoa. It will need some localisation to better fit our context
@photosbyann The Coast, as we Mainlanders call the West Coast of the South island, is a favorite place of mine. For some reason I live on the East Coast. When we do visit we wander amoung the beauty of the forest like this and I come home with a thousand images on my phone! Charleston is a favorite spot. Love being in the forest when it's raining. And it does over there!
@BigD I can’t wait to do the new #KawatiriCycleTrail from #westport to #charleston
@photosbyann I will have to check out that trail too. Have ebike, will trail!
