Christian Adams cartoon There is an old proverb about those who fail to learn from history being condemned to repeat it. This is, sadly, true of China today.

@annapatten
This is kind of bizarre if you ask me.

Despite being ground zero for COVID-19, China has done a great job controlling it and its spread. Shockingly few Chinese have died of it.

Yes, the lockdowns are draconian but have been very successful in saving Chinese lives.

Of all the things worth protesting, why would you protest the government saving your life? There's a danger they might listen to you.

@tofugolem Perhaps the relatives of those who have died because of China’s zero-Covid policy might disagree. In Sept, a bus carrying people to a quarantine centre crashed, killing 27. Last week at least 10 were killed in a building fire in Urumqi, Xinjiang, which had been under lockdown for 100 days. In other locked down cities there are reports of suicides and other deaths linked zero-Covid policy

@annapatten
Are you seriously suggesting that more people died from the lockdown than would have died from letting the disease rage unchecked?

Wow.

You do know that the device you are using to communicate anti-science messages on the Internet exists only because of a large number of scientific conclusions over a long period of time, right?

@tofugolem Are you utterly and completely mad? I am not anti science, far from it, I volunteered for clinical trials during the development of Covid vaccines. Nor did I ever assert that more people died from lockdown than from Covid. You are totally inventing responses to imaginary conversations.
@annapatten
And if China relaxes lockdown measures, what happens to the death rate?
@tofugolem What is needed is an effective and wholesale vaccination programme, preferably with the more effective vaccines developed in Europe and the US. They have effectively wasted 3 years with their policy of attempting to hold back the tide. Yes there will be deaths, as there were in the rest of the world, but it is simply unsustainable to lockdown a country the size of China indefinitely
@tofugolem How long can the keep their population from contact with Covid? As I have said before it is now endemic in the rest of the world and is constantly evolving new strains. Potentially more powerful, more contagious - we, the whole world, need to be vigilant to changes, China cannot continue to ignore it and hope it goes away
@annapatten
It's endemic because our governments prioritized the profits of the wealthy over the lives of the masses. It upsets me that more people aren't upset about that.
@tofugolem It upsets me that you are putting ideology above humanity. There is a huge amount wrong with the US but at least they rolled out the vaccines FoC to as many who didn’t listen to the far right nonsense of using it to implant microchips or enslave us all. Here in the UK there was a great deal of greed and graft and disappearing £billions but at least they claimed to follow the science

@annapatten
I'm hardly putting ideology above humanity.

There was a moment when we could have brought this under control. Scientists warned us about the time window for doing that.

America decided that they profits of corporations and billionaires was more important, and now hundreds die in America every day because of that.

@annapatten
As opposed to the American approach of simply accepting hundreds of deaths per day?

When large numbers of people are dying over a wide area and the government tells you it's not a pandemic, they are telling you which lives they don't care about.

With of malaria, that would be poor people in warm countries.

With COVID-19, that's the unvaccinated, which is mostly conservatives and African-Americans.
