When I was at the NY Daily News in 2015, I wrote a story with Reuven Blau bout a woman who got sexually assaulted at #Rikers - and saved a semen-stained shirt as proof.

Two guards were implicated: One was arrested and took a guilty plea in 2017.

Now - SEVEN YEARS AFTER THE FACT - the other has FINALLY been fired.

Here's the story:

A Rikers Officer Had Sex With a Detainee. It Took 7 Years to Fire Him.

The officer also asked the woman to cover up that another Rikers guard sexually assaulted her.

That’s horrible. It is.

Not to shove the spotlight away from this particular injustice but what, if any, impact do you think a running list could have on raising awareness on the prevalence of these incidents in U.S. prisons?

There is still such a huge blind spot on all the “unintended consequences” of mass incarceration. In part, because of the deliberate efforts to hide this information from the larger community. 1/2

Baby steps toward holding ourselves accountable for the conditions we, as an “enlightened society” allow to exist inside OUR “correctional facilities.” 2/2
