๐Ÿ‘†๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ  Remarkable poll on search engine preference has closed. A plurality of the Fedi does not use Google Search? I learned of many unfamiliar alternatives in the replies. This result makes me wonder if #GoogleTrends is not adequately capturing interest in the #Fediverse because of the selection bias against using it?
@profcarroll I started using Duck Duck Go in 2010! I'd be interested to read more about the alternatives people mentioned to you.
@wendyg @profcarroll I used DuckDuckGo until they began really censoring results, so I'm using Ecosia until I can identify another viable alternative. It's good to have options.
@alice I use DDG's bang (!) feature to search a lot. for example "!yt something" and it'll search YouTube for something. Does Ecosia have similar?
@tristen That's built-in to my browser. Has since I used Konqueror under KDE 20 years ago. ๐Ÿ˜

@tristen Ah! There are more broadly usable accessibility "pseudo-standards" developing. For example, typing a forward slash will jump to the search on most sites with prominent search inputs, including YouTube. Pressing question mark will show a reference of available shortcuts on sites like these.

It took a few years since I opened the ticket, but the Python Package Index finally implemented it.

In Safari, typing y into the address bar suggests YouTube, tab accepts it, then type search, โŽ.
