If you're hearing a lot about the fediverse these days, you should know: Mastodon is not the whole fediverse and the fediverse is not simply a Twitter replacement. The fediverse is an entire ecosystem, built on something called ActivityPub. Learn more: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2022/11/leaving-twitters-walled-garden

@eff thanks for this explainer. One issue I’ve been thinking about is the difficulty for average users ability to discover the best instance to join. Most will likely just follow the herd which leads to bigger instances that may not necessarily be better. Then there is the issue of trust that the instance will be managed well over time (with no standards for transparency/accountability this may not be the case). I know one can move but then the problem becomes discovery again…
@eff the result is that some users will seek to create their own server/instances where they can manage things themselves and other users will end up in what they deem to be “safe communities” that may not be truly safe in some cases (I’m thinking of a state setting up instances to attract and track opinions as one example). I think better mechanisms for transparency, accountability and discoverability are going to be needed to allow the #fediverse to grow and thrive long term.
