Excellent discussion. "building a community" is messy and likely lead to fragmentation, but the alternative is chaos.

I don't wish to be naive about this, we need to be honest about what's worked and what hasn't but right now we need someone to CARE and to even TRY (as the main Mastodon folk don't appear to)

Improving the Mastodon Covalent seems like a good start https://joinmastodon.org/covenant

It's a good start. Since no one seemed to be working on moderator guidelines I've started a process myself. It starts by thinking about what good moderation would look like in "tough call" cases, then from that I want to distill a guide, mostly based on the responses that are gathering on these posts:

@futurebird

Thank you so much for starting this! The "What would you do?" format is brilliant. It's exactly the type of 'slippery slope' discussion that needs to be addressed. I'll boost your post and I hope others do as well.

@futurebird @scottjenson @david_megginson @ralf @heysupratim @mattblaze These are really excellent starting points for discussion/training!

I suggest moderators get basic training in the tactics used to promote toxic propaganda, the role of useful idiots; the willfully ignorant; the neg attention seekers that are common points of drama in social media etc.
Much of it hinges on intention

Also, mods are much safer when their roles are clear and largely predefined and when they have something to point to to explain decisions.

"Don't be a jerk" is a fine philosophy, but useless in practice.
