the protests in China are a great example of what we will all lose if Twitter blinks out of existence. there's really nothing like it for following rapidly unfolding events in real time, even from thousands of miles away
the decentralized nature of mastodon makes it hard for me to imagine information traveling in the same way.
@qjurecic counterpoint, the decentralized nature of Mastodon makes it easier for information to get past the Great Firewall maybe?
@lxtruong @qjurecic That is an interesting thought. Doe’s Mastodon get past the #GreatFirewall?
@qjurecic This is exactly what I’d miss about Twitter, not only with international news, but mobilizing in the US (strikes, protests).

@qjurecic I wonder if it makes it harder for totalitarian states to control though?

I admit I sometimes hesitate to post my real feelings on China's current leadership on the bird site, because I want to travel there again someday.

This feels more like shouting into the void so I hesitated less. And should never hesitate at all really, speak truth to power, even though no one but a government censor would hear me either place.

@qjurecic I'm sure info will be shared differently. We have to follow to comment, and can't quote 'tweet'. But it's more conversational here, which I'm getting used to.
@qjurecic it won’t travel in exactly the same way, but it will travel just as quickly. Remember in China folks aren’t accessing Twitter easily either. Nor are they in Iran.
@qjurecic my initial impression is that the community matters more than the platform. I followed a bunch of infosec and tech focused accounts on Twitter, and there was a mass jump here. That part of my feed looks a lot like it did on Twitter. Other groups I follow haven't jumped en masse, and I haven't replaced that here (at least so far). If Twitter disappeared and everyone moved here, I think Mastodon could fill that hole. Realistically, I would expect balkanization, and who knows what happens
@qjurecic but with musk in charge we are already on the way to that.

@qjurecic

It's already lost. I mean, Twitter's not going to blink out of existence, but the Twitter that supports that sort of social change is already gone, even if the body is gonna keep twitching for a while.

@qjurecic I’m leaning toward lower velocity having more advantages than disadvantages. If birdsite dies, I’m going to be just fine knowing fewer dumb conspiracy theories will reach escape velocity to reach normies or catch on with right wing influencers.
