This morning, I'm installing Linux Lite on this old Dell laptop with a second gen Intel proc and these looooovely screen bars flowing down the screen (I want to see if I can replace it with an FHD screen). Lovely. :)

Despite the age and flaws, I love the keyboard on this laptop. This'll serve as a simple search/tasks machine for my shop, for quick lookups and the like.

I might be a little distro hoppy today...I'll share my thoughts as I go. :)

Linux Lite's overall "look and feel" is pretty stellar. I've always liked their feather logo, and the liteness of the distro. That said, XFCE always has it's quirks (I prefer Cinnamon), and I've had to train it a bit to get it to my preferred useability.

The installer loaded for ~20 minutes before getting going. A small con outside a pretty good initial experience. :) #linux #tech #retro

...what are you hiding back there? Show me your secrets. :) #repairtime
Sometimes, that sort of damage can be repaired by reseating the display cable from both sides. First, the rear side of the panel... #repairtime

Alas, no dice from this side. :(

Here, you can see the two lines very prominently. #repairtime

Don't be like Aunt Anneliese and work on your machines while they have power.

...

I mean, don't, I totally forgot. 😂

Disassembling and reassembling this display was pretty danged easy. I think disassembling the rest is going to be just as simple; hopefully the display cable isn't buried too far inside. #repairtime

Everything is immediately accessable when the bottom cover is removed. Even the display cable.

Sadly, reseating it didn't fix the issue. Oh, well. It'll still serve well for shop searches and the like. :)

(If you look closely, you can see the battery mod I did previously, which I documented at that other place... I'll do that here again when I have another laptop with this style of battery that needs replacing.) #repairtime

@retronianne oh my. The Latitude E-series are some big favorites of mine. Shame yours died though. :(
@xodium It's not dead! I was trying to fix the stupid pink and yellow lines on it's display. I'm probably gonna replace the panel and keep using it for small tasks, it's too good a machine to get rid of. :)
@retronianne ahhhh. Didn’t see the rest of the thread at first. Still, the display issue would annoy me something fierce, ha. Thankfully displays are prooooobably cheap/easy?
@xodium I'm checking around, it shouldn't be more than $40 or so. :)
