This is for white people: The point is not telling a target of #racism to block report and defederate so that they (and you) no longer need to see it and you can stay comfortable. The point is supporting them when they call it out and then YOU end it, or at least make it have consequences, by your own actions and within yourself. When racism is pointed out, don’t make it the observer’s fault. Go after the perp. It’s a white people problem.

@whytgndlf
When I have these slightly awkward conversations with well-meaning white folks I often say:

Use your powers for good, people. Step *into* the fray and use your social power (and other power) against the racist person. The silent bystander thing is *not* going to cut it.

@DeliaChristina @whytgndlf I'm not going to join FreeSpeechExtremists just I can confront users of Poast when they mob a Black intellectual I follow because he happens to be on an instance with a mod that didn't have the sense to apply block lists before opening to the public.

And I'm not going to hassle the mod of BlackTwitter because their block list is deficient. That's for people who use that service to do, not me.

@opendna @DeliaChristina makes sense, but what are other places in your life where you can speak up?

@whytgndlf @DeliaChristina oh, yeah. My comment is about Mastodon only.

As it relates to IRL (sic), I've got no reservations and nothing to add to what's said above. Yes, confront bigots and tank hate. It's wholesome fun for the whole family.
