Who are some cool people to follow here?
@zzig honestly look through my follows. There are a bunch of really good people on here.
@MarkCodesTheWeb yeah, kinda doing that now.
@MarkCodesTheWeb Oh, I can't see a full list for you.
@zzig the way I’ve found best to find people here is to create a post with several hashtags for stuff that interests you and pin it. Then search those hashtags and just see what stuff people are posting and follow based on that.
@MarkCodesTheWeb I refuse to ever use a hashtag.
@zzig that's kind of how Mastodon works. It's not like Twitter where there's an algorithm. Everything you see here is controlled by you. At least for the home feed. You could just scroll your local feed for other people on your instance or the Federated feed for all posts. But clicking or searching a tag is much faster to find interesting people.
@MarkCodesTheWeb How do I see this federated feed?
@zzig What are you using to view Mastodon? If it's the official app, there isn't a federated feed which is one of the reasons I don't use it. You could click the explore tab and it shows some Federated. Third party apps are typically better and have different features. If you're on the web/mobile site there should be a tab for it.
@MarkCodesTheWeb Yeah, I'm on the stock app. What's a good alternative, and are they safe? Always get nervous with third-party apps.
@zzig If you're on Android use Tusky. If iOS use either Meta Text or Tooot (3 os, not Toot! which is a completely different paid app). I prefer Tooot for the layout and aestetic reasons. But Meta Text has more features. These apps are open source, their source could be viewed on GitHub. They should be safe.
@MarkCodesTheWeb right on. I'll check them out. Gracias.
@zzig you got it. If you have any other Mastodon questions let me know. I've been using it quite a lot the past week and really enjoying my time here considerably more than the other place. But it isn't as simple and straightforward. There are different instances and different apps and all to add to the confusion. Once you get the hang of it though it's pretty easy to enjoy.
@MarkCodesTheWeb Just got an email saying my account was accessed from a new IP. What's up with that?
@zzig Which app are you using? Some use a VPN.
@MarkCodesTheWeb Tusky. Think it's a VPN?
@zzig It might be. I've had the same message when logging in with different apps testing them. The Source for Tusky is here https://github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky. I don't think there's anything insecure. It doesn't specify that it uses a VPN but not sure what other explanation. I got that message twice with different apps I tried.

@MarkCodesTheWeb Good shit.
@zzig most of the people building on this platform are doing open source and seem to value things like privacy and security. I feel way safer on Mastodon than I did on Twitter from a data perspective.
@zzig check out @estrapade for her own posts and great reblogs
@maegrenofwithy you're very kind! Hello @zzig :)
@estrapade @maegrenofwithy Howdy. Think I've seen you around the old hellscape.
