The land was ceded to the United States as part of the 1833 Treaty of Chicago (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1833_Treaty_of_Chicago). That Wikipedia article, as well as the article on the Indian Removal Act of 1830 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Removal_Act) are good readings for today in particular.
