There are not 87,000 new IRS agents. This thing that Republicans are saying they will repeal as their first order of business in the majority does not exist. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/06/us/politics/irs-agents-fact-check.html https://twitter.com/HouseGOP/status/1595229646127177729
Fact-Checking the Misleading Claim About 87,000 Tax Agents

The claim, which has been debunked numerous times, has resurged ahead of the midterm elections. Here’s why it’s still wrong.

@kairyssdal Seriously, do they actually believe this, or is it just performative for a manipulated audience who does believe it? I’m not sure which is worse.
@kairyssdal It is my understanding that the Treasury Department is in the Executive Branch so that pretty much puts it out of any control of Congress. They could starve it for funding, but that wouldn't really fly. So it is all more gaslighting BS.

@kairyssdal they are going to use this lie to destroy the IRS so that tax cheats and foreign oligarchs can more easily funnel $$$ to their campaigns.

The ROI on bribing Republicans is incredible.

@kairyssdal ever since irs tried to critically screen the 501c3 bona fides of tea party groups, irs has been the gop’s favorite target. It resonates with their base because they fundamentally don’t care if the govt is funded.
@kairyssdal Hmmmm... Aren't IRS agents essentially law enforcement officers? So the GOP is in favor of defunding the police?
@kairyssdal - They are going to have a hard time repealing it if they only control the House.
Thanks @kairyssdal. Unfortunately, this is what happens when people don’t read. 87,000 over 10 years, many will backfill retirements and many will not be agents. The IRS needs customer service and IT just as much as enforcement. Far be it from the Republicans to let the truth get in the way of a solid election narrative.
