Hello Mastodon.

I am looking for new PhD students to come work with me at the Oxford Internet Institute in 22/23 (@oiioxford) to study the future of data privacy and digital rights, the impact of AI and algorithms on digital platforms, and help co-create better digital futures.

Boosts very much appreciated! 🐘

I approach these questions using various methodology, often a/ statistical models to make sense of our complex world, b/ adversarial machine learning to highlight weaknesses of deployed technologies, c/ interactive tools and viz to promote better practices and empower people.

Estimating the success of re-identifications in incomplete datasets using generative models - Nature Communications

Anonymization has been the main means of addressing privacy concerns in sharing medical and socio-demographic data. Here, the authors estimate the likelihood that a specific person can be re-identified in heavily incomplete datasets, casting doubt on the adequacy of current anonymization practices.

I'm warmly welcoming interdisciplinary profiles with grounding in applied maths/CS but also interest in doing good social science research, notably to critically investigate the harms of emerging digital technology and improve how people, policymakers, and civil society engage with such technology.

The official central deadline for DPhil (PhD) applications is 6 Jan 2023 at the Oxford Internet Institute (but please get in touch in November & December to discuss projects, directions, scholarships and funding).

Also, will do my best to support people from marginalized groups in academia (and at Oxford) and find time to meet and strengthen your application!

Dr Luc Rocher

Luc investigates privacy harms posed by large-scale collections of human data and deployed AI technologies, identifying gaps in how technology is regulated and risks are documented, and proposing better data sharing models for academic research.

@cynddl Sounds fascinating, timely, and right down my interest area from the social sciences and journalism perspectives. I will reach out soon.
