No aspect of nursing school prepared me on how to deal with racism from patients. As a Black nurse who deeply cares about my patients, I will never understand how a patient could show me so much hate while I'm doing my best to save their life. Nothing prepares you for this.
Nursing organizations MUST do better to end racism. #Nursing #NurseTwitter #Canada
Don't even come on my timeline to excuse racism using mental illness. I will block you right away. Mental illness does not cause racism. Go educate yourself.
For those of you in positions of power or with some sort of influence who continue to remain silent in the face of racism, may you find the courage to speak up & be anti-racist. Just because you're benefitting from a racist society doesn't mean the harm won't come to you someday.
Grateful for organizations like @[email protected] committed to doing THE work to dismantle anti-Blackness in nursing and healthcare.
Thankful for everyone sharing and joining this conversation from a place of respect and anti-racism. These difficult conversations must continue, so please allow yourself space to be uncomfortable, to unlearn and to join as co-conspirators in dismantling oppressive systems.
For those asking where they could start, @[email protected] offers a phenomenal antiracism course. See link below:
