If you come to the #fediverse to seek fame, rethink your objectives.

Place isn’t built for that.

If you come to #mastodon to seek community, you’ll be doing much better.

If you come here to be as simply and authentically yourself as possible under the circumstances, you’ll be just fine.

Kinda cool to find others I didn’t know I’d want to find and that others who didn’t know they’d want to find me do find me.

@Aphrodite Other social networks are about creating an audience, collecting followers just to have people listening to you. Meanwhile here we try that every post reaches the right people so we can start conversations. Most of the people here are not searching for likes, but for others to interact with.
@Aphrodite I'm hoping that this place will be a little slower, a little less intense than the bird site, where getting amplified by the algorithm isn't the only goal. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic. :)

@celeste_kallio

I try my best to be as genuine as possible everywhere, but it definitely feels easier here since my genuine self is a kind person.

Commercial algos seek controversy over communication. Sharing with friends is an algo that builds community.

@Aphrodite good point. I am seeking community first, friends, opinions and knowledge. Is it ok to share other communities outside (like a Facebook group)of the Fediverse?

@janettespeyer

tldr: yup

I keep my profile public and my DMs open.

I post public words I intend to be publicly shared. (I mean, I do also have a podcast, so..)

Every time I write or speak, I attempt to convey as exact a meaning as I want to say.

I prefer inclusion of the hard link if possible, as a matter of access.

@Aphrodite Agree so much. I made a similar observation about an hour ago: https://indieweb.social/@charlesroper/109394194876424747.

I am honestly so surprised to have had such a good experience here.

I left Twitter in 2018 and, although I knew about Mastodon from years before, never joined because the birdsite was such a burnout experience.

So, since 2018 I've been isolated. Until now. I joined a few Slacks and Discords, but none stuck. Mastodon is like that first true spring day after a particularly harsh winter. 🌱

What I love about #Mastodon is not just the breadth of voices here (depth and quality all do indeed seem better). What I love is how being strident, or aggressive, or angry doesn't AMPLIFY in the same way it did on the birdsite. On Mastodon, quieter voices have a chance. Here feels more about discourse and persuasion than it does about anger, brutality, and aggression. The sun rules here, not the wind. https://read.gov/aesop/143.html "Gentleness and kind persuasion win where force and bluster fail."

@Aphrodite Thing is, you don’t need to catch likes on Mastodon and neither do all the marketing tricks, because you can’t monetise yourself like on TikTok or Youtube etc. So it’s a different approach.
@Aphrodite That's why I like the new 4 feature to follow hashtags: It's much easier to find my community.
@Aphrodite well said 👏

@marie

Tired of needing to be less than authentic in my life generally.

Here’s it’s just easier for me to be as authentically me as I can be than on commercial sites that want to data mine, categorize, minimize, and dehumanize.
