You don't even need to follow people to create a good feed from scratch, just follow some hashtags of topics that interest you and then add individual people as they impress you.

next to the back button when you search a hashtag there's a little meeple with a +/x icon. If you click the + meeple it will follow the hashtag, if you click the x it will unfollow.
