Several years ago, there was a flap in the fediverse when someone mentioned being part of infragard (a public/private partnership with the FBI) for securitng infrastructure.

My comments about CISA members joining infosec.exchange have rekindled those flames, with instances now apparently blocking infosec.exchange because their members have a legitimate reason to fear the US government. We also have accounts owned by the CERTs of several countries, and even the EU. It's disappointing, however I understand the reasoning. I am posting this so that infosec.exchange accounts, along with others in the community, have a chance to move accounts, or institute their own blocks, as necessary.

It's becoming clear to me that some parts of the fediverse may be incompatible with each other. Not for technical reasons, but for philosophical ones. That makes me a bit sad, particularly in the case of CISA, who are doing their level best to improve the security and resiliency of technology that underpins modern civilization.

If this is the lsat message your instance sees from me, be well. If you chose to move to a new instance that blocks this one, I appreciate you have been here and hope the experience was good.

Go forth and do good things.

@jerry didn't realize what cisa stood for until someone posted about it and you boosted it, so I'm grateful for the transparency. That said, I have some thinking to do as I don't want to be the source of putting anyone I interact with in danger, make them feel in danger, or even just lose connection with them. Since this is my main account and all others are for specific goals.

Is there any way to export follow/follower aliases to a text file so I can hold onto it and not lose folks who are about to block us while I make a decision 😅

@tes you can do into your profile settings and there is an "import/export" section that will let you download your account information.

The effective way, though, is to perform an account migration. You can find instructions on the docs.joinmastodon.org website.

Note that CISA is isn't a law enforcement agency and has a mission for improving security of critical infrastructure. The reason people are blocking is because it's being interpreted as tacit support for all the bad things the US government does.

There are some who misunderstand laws, like the 1st amendment, freedom of information act, and so on, as a reason to pile on, but those aren't legitimate arguments.

I do understand you not wanting to harm others. We share that. If you were to move to another instance, people seem to be liking Hachyderm.io. If you're looking or something that would take a stance against what we're doing, I likely recommend octodon.social. Mastodon.social or Mastodon.online area also good options when they reopen registrations.

@jerry thank you for distilling all of that information I'd have had to research into one place! I hope this doesn't become an issue, and the thought of doing an official migration hurts my heart. I really love this field, this instance, and you. Personally, my decision is about whether I keep two mains, or switch my main.

It seems like, irrespective of whether I agree with their evaluations or not, some folks I know may be on instances where mods block us based on their evaluations. This is different than blocking an instance with malicious or neglectful admins, where I can say (using an extreme version here for claroty): "it's my friend's fault for staying on that horrible server, I hope they leave it and resolve this issue" because in this case, even if it is rooted in a misinterpretation of the org and their goals, or an assumption on our values based on looser restrictions than they'd personally hold, it's out of an abundance of caution and wanting to protect people. I can't really fault that, morally, in my opinion. So it's tough.

All this would be irrelevant if they'd just host their own instance 😖 but then it'd probably pop up again in another way anyway
