Due to a transporter accident, I have cloned myself, please find me at both

@scattermoon

and

@scattermoon

for the time being.

seriously though if you're on mastodon.social or mastodon.online you're about to lose access to this account due to weirder.earth having a defederation policy with those instances (which I didn't know before jumping here) so you might want to follow @scattermoon (again) so we don't lose touch all over again.

I know it's messy, I'm sorry, I'm as confused as anyone

@scattermoon @scattermoon Would you like me to try to explain?
@artsyhonker @scattermoon I know what's happening, I just feel a bit at a loss I'm losing several hundred of my contacts because a server I moved to is going to defederate, I didn't have any way of knowing this before joining it, and now I have to wait 30 days before I can redirect my follows again.

@scattermoon @scattermoon I initially thought you had moved to weirder.earth *because* of the messages I have seen (and at least one I have written, from a different account than this one) about weirder earth and several other servers defederating from mastodon.social

It is definitely messy.

I have accounts on several servers partly because it gives me some wiggle room if/when stuff like this happens, but that strategy definitely has its own drawbacks.

@artsyhonker @scattermoon alas, no, I just had it sold to me as a good place that wasn't overloaded. I didn't realise I needed to do that much current research before any move, especially given I couldn't then go 'my bad' and move elsewhere.
@scattermoon @scattermoon begun, the defederation wars have

@tomphillips @scattermoon

A communications disruption can mean only one thing. Invasion.

(I have to stop saying this in work when Slack goes down - no one gets the reference)

@warblin @tomphillips here comes Grievous with his 6 different fediverse accounts
@scattermoon @warblin okay now I'm thinking about Saw Gerrera's rant in Andor about different rebel factions - "Neo-Republicans! Sectorists! Galaxy Partitionists!" - except it's about Mastodon instances
@scattermoon @scattermoon unfortunately, when you move accounts, the old one becomes unfollowable and unusable, which is a pisser
@stavvers @scattermoon I specifically turned that off though! Which is why I'm able to post from here and still have followers here
@scattermoon @scattermoon For science, I just tried to follow the mastodon.social you and it wouldn’t let me - that could just be Metatext being flaky though
@artieopteryx @scattermoon oh so it is. even though it says that shouldn't be the case. ...do I need a third account???
@scattermoon @scattermoon I think the accepted Mastodon standard is to have three accounts for the elven kings, seven for the dwarf lords and nine for mortal men
@stavvers @scattermoon You can reactivate it after the move, but it won't have any of your follows. At least it worked for me. I made exactly the same moves as Elaine only 6 months earlier (bc other friends' servers already blocked mastodon.social then) and reactivated my old account the other day when weirder.earth announced they were joining the block, to be able to keep reading mastodon.social people
@scattermoon must admit i was a bit surprised to see you moved to w.e, i migrated off of there because their federation approach started feeling too restrictive to really be useful. some parts of the fediverse seem weirdly set on being anti-larger-following, even though a decent amount of people's jobs rely on people seeing their posts :/
@blueish I didn't know about that! Nobody told me! And I couldn't go "oops my bad" because of the 30 day cooldown, so I'm left feeling like an idiot who shouldn't even be using this platform.
@scattermoon I felt really unsure about moving because it's hard to know anything about where you're moving to. You can get so lost in reading current blocked lists (which may or may not be there), admin accounts for a given instance, the fediblock hashtag that you either give up and close everything or chance it and maybe get burned by it. The experience sucks and a lot of the "you can move later" talk misses a *lot* of asterisks
@scattermoon @scattermoon It is so so so frustrating. I have many feelings. I think at the very least you should be able to read through previous admin decisions before joining a server, so you can understand how they're being made, what's prioritised etc.
@andustar literally couldn't see the "hi, we're defederating!" message until I'd signed up. Nothing on the homepage made any of this clear.
@scattermoon yes, looks like all moderation decisions are posted privately to the server that way, in most servers I can see. It's frustrating to join somewhere on the basis of their public rules etc and only be able to see the practical interpretations/implications of that once you arrive. All very well urging people to move off massive centralised unmoderate-able servers and onto smaller more capable ones, but HOW is anyone supposed to pick one that works for their specific needs, other than banding with some friends and doing all the work yourself!
@scattermoon @scattermoon I've got you on weirder.earth but your mastodon.social page has no follow button, or the ... in the corner so I can open in tje browser.
I've no idea if it's an issue at mastodon.social's end, or if my instance tech.lgbt has defederated from them 😕
