Upgrading Windows 11 🙄, WSL, and Ubuntu to have systemd support is a very boring way to end the week.

@jakedolan I'm gonna be that guy but... take it all the way and switch to the Linux desktop! Docker runs at native speed, upgrades are painless, and everything sooooo much faster on the same hardware. Also, no matter what, my Windows and Mac install always gets slower over time, haven't had that issue with Linux at all. Works with my printer, scanner, webcam, thunderbolt dock, usb headsets, etc. all out of the box.

Speaking of, use @pop_os_official , it is the best 😁

@jcs224 @pop_os_official Maybe next system upgrade. :) Hard to make the full switch especially since I am a very casual Linux user.

Honestly, WSL is pretty phenomenal outside of a few quirks for my usecase. I love being able to develop in Linux while still having the Windows environment that I am most comfortable with.

@jakedolan @pop_os_official Makes sense. Glad Windows works for you. I've always disliked it, at least everything since Windows 7, but tolerated it because I usually didn't have a choice 😆 one of the perks of self-employment I guess.

The Linux desktop has really accelerated the last few years, though. In the same way many are ditching Twitter for Mastodon, I think a similar event is possible for Mac/Windows to Linux... 😏

@jcs224 @pop_os_official I don't love the direction that Windows has been going as it gets more intrusive by integrating some of the worst social media ideas.

Maybe more of a leveling of the field for less technical users, but I don't think there will be a mass switch to Linux unless Apple/Microsoft do something like pull an Elon. Even then, we are deeply entrenched in these ecosystems a real switch would be more decades in the making.

@jakedolan true. It would take hardware vendors to one day just stop shipping Windows with their computers, or it gets so bad as to force many users to leave (who will probably just go to Mac in that case).

I've heard great things about the M1, but Apple likes to obsolete their machines after 2 years, and there are compatibility issues with the M1 (Docker is slow for example).

For a lot of things, Linux isn't there yet, for sure. But for programming web-based apps that run on Linux anyway... 👌
