Remember just like anywhere else without end to end encryption, your DMs here are not private.

Distributed servers (/instances) can make for interesting times (eg, potentially no more record of your toots/followings/followers) should your server go down. Server resilience against hostile actors is case-by-case.

@PeteStrzok I'm going back and forth between whether DMs are even a useful feature on a public forum app or not.
@PeteStrzok indeed, been thinking about this also, part of the inherent risk of the platform. I suspect capabilities like high availability and other forms of resiliency will evolve out of necessity where they do not already exist. Adding encryption for DMs is just another feature waiting to be implemented. I wonder more about the implications of decentralized moderation - I believe in the wisdom of the crowds, but looking forward to all the free speech bun fighting nonetheless.
@PeteStrzok glad I found ya! Things are moving really quickly here. It is refreshing.
@PeteStrzok considering running my own for this reason!
@PeteStrzok couldn’t they add a parameter to the user profile for DM’s and integrate it with the client apps? Like pressing the DM button opens a new message in Signal or the like? More secure and user friendly.
@PeteStrzok The DM issue is the biggest issue at present for me. I think the redundancy aspects have multiple solutions if people are patient

@PeteStrzok

Is that really a problem? Is anyone placing anything confidential or sensitive In a DM on this platform, and if so why? Have they not heard of Whatsapp, Signal and God knows how many others? This is a social network. If people are putting things they DON'T want read on it, they're sorta missing the point.
