Just wondering if it would make sense in the medium/long run for @sigchi to take official stewardship of hci.social? @andresmh, what do you think?

@floe @sigchi @andresmh I was talking about this with neha the other day. In practice I imagine (I say without actually being on the SIGCHI exec myself) SIGCHI could in theory offer resource without ownership. Or safety/redundancies etc., provide routes to recruiting volunteering efforts. Etc. or could listen to whatever Andres feels would be helpful - but I also don’t think it should become something tied to membership.

But maybe it would become a legally more challenging thing in the future.

@floe @sigchi @andresmh talking very casually - I should say - in our semi regular random chats about whatever’s currently going on. We didn’t have a “meeting” about it hah.
@drmaxlwilson @floe @sigchi @andresmh Out of curiosity, how is ownership and legal issues such as copyright handled with regards to the ACM listserv, and would such a model be transferrable?
@mporcheron you're asking questions that are above my station :)
@mporcheron @drmaxlwilson @floe @sigchi @andresmh The ACM listservs (e.g. CHI-announcements) are moderated by volunteers (mainly those on the SIGCHI Comms committee). The SIGCHI-members listserv is configured such that only the exec. committee members post/forward to it. The SIGCHI Discord, owned by a VP Ops account, may be the only SIGCHI forum where anyone can post anytime and there are volunteers assigned to moderate if/as needed. The ACM/SIGCHI codes of conduct apply across these spaces.
@neha @drmaxlwilson @floe @sigchi @andresmh Really interesting, and thanks for taking the time to reply.
@mporcheron @drmaxlwilson @floe @sigchi @andresmh As Max mentioned, SIGCHI could offer resources towards this space (e.g. via the development fund, CARES) -- seems like a natural way to help, with no strings attached -- but I imagine that not offering resources might be more appreciated by some, and that would make sense as well. 🙏
@floe @andresmh @sigchi there was a previous thread discussing this – my take then (in line with @dan_bennett’s comment): https://hci.social/@jovermeulen/109311760842922770
Jo Vermeulen (@jovermeulen@hci.social)

@sigchi @andresmh @nigini Totally agree, I really like the organic nature of how https://hci.social has established itself so far. I worry that making this instance officially tied to SIGCHI or ACM may overcomplicate things and make it feel less inclusive. Maybe we can also learn from how this is done at https://vis.social, which as far as I understand has a broad range of visualization folks, not just academics and IEEE members?
