@TimOfLegend I joined mastodon.gamedev.place because I wanted my Local/Community tab to show me people mostly talking about gamedev. Maybe name a few interests and make a post asking for server suggestions based around those things.

@TimOfLegend Not sure it matters? You can search for users across all servers and follow them. One that has a good size user base is how I chose (mas.to) or one centered around your interests so you see good local posts.

@Jer1ch0 @TimOfLegend It does matter. You're putting a lot of trust in the people who run your server to run it well, moderate it effectively, stick around, and not abuse their power.

Overloaded instances are painfully laggy, and poorly moderated ones frequently find themselves silenced or blocked by others you may want to interact with.

That's why I moved off mas.to - it was slow and blocked on instances I wanted to interact with.

@Freaky @TimOfLegend thanks for that! New to this mastadon thing (as most of us are) have been happy with mas.to so far, they cleared up the slowdown fairly quickly and haven't noticed any blocks yet...but will bear that in mind.

@TimOfLegend every server follows its own rules. You can write the far more letters in c.im than in gamedev.place, but I feel most comfortable in the latter. Many people I know are there.
