Proposed:

There is a certain kind of tired after the end of an ICU clinical day that is different and deeper than the tired of even a longer research office day

@iwashyna There most certainly is. Rest well my friend.
@iwashyna This is 100% true. Type of research totally unimportant as well. ICU tired outstrips 99% of other tired, not limited to ā€œresearch tiredā€, ā€œinternational travel tiredā€ and ā€œinsomnia last night tired.ā€ Only thing close is ā€œsick/very young child tiredā€.

@iwashyna @drwillzacharias @Charlotte_Summers
Now that I experienced all the above, I’d say nothing like ā€œsick/very young child/ren with no extended family/childcare support during a pandemicā€

I haven’t slept in 3 years……..🫠

@iwashyna
Jack, first off, thank you for what you do! Aside from the fatigue caused by giving your best to care for people who are experiencing their worst, how much of a fatigue factor would you consider the cacophony of alarms coming from the vital signs devices? Especially given that so many are false positives.
@calmwave I actually think the ambient noise in the ICU is not so much. The "virtual noise" of all the documentation needs piling up in the EHR inbox, all the boxes to be checked, those more so...
@iwashyna that's good to hear. virtual noise/documentation - ugh, sorry. :( Curious --- could you provide a rough estimate of your perception of the false positive vital signs alarms in your ICU? 20/50/90/etc %? No worries if you don't care to answer. Hope you get some time to rest and recharge.
