I've only been here 9 days, but I think Mastodon could use a decontamination chamber for some #Twitter migrants. There's been an uptick in aggression and angst here in recent days, which I guess is to be expected given the long-deteriorating culture of the birdsite. But isn't that what we're trying to leave behind?

Advice to newcomers: Take a moment (or two or three). Look around. Remember why you left the other place. And think about what you can do to make sure this is a far better one.

@ajreinhart It's a different culture. Different vibe. It was here first.
@ajreinhart what are you seeing? I haven’t seen much. Maybe mine is just so much smaller it makes a difference.
@ajreinhart really , you post this tirade against new users posting about politics , or they social issues using the expression “ decontamination chamber “ ? Dude !!!
@dradeguardia It's interesting that you saw my post as a tirade. It's also interesting that you inferred I don't like posts about politics and social issues, when I mentioned neither (and fully support discussion of both). I can't speak for you, but 13+ years on Twitter made me increasingly defensive. My post was an attempt to encourage people to leave their Twitter battle armour behind and let them know they can engage on the topics they care about in a different way here, if they choose to.
@ajreinhart my fault: English is my 2nd language a we use tirade = thread so that is that . But Im getting little tired of all these “warning “ toots . I agree with you but you also need to understand that people comes from diverse groups and what is civilized for one might not be seen the same by others. I think u missed my point the use of “decontamination chambers”. Coming from Jewish family that is not a term we use lightly

Tenor
@ajreinhart it's a fair question. I use social media to share pithy memes and playful snark. However, I also use it to vent frustration with politicians who wield their power to harm others. Politicians who hide behind "thoughts and prayers", instead of making policies and taking action. However, I think we are on the same page when it comes to using demeaning or abusive language to people in their TL. Their is no platform where that should be ok.
@ajreinhart Exactly. I'm so sick of all the hate. Let it go and let's start with a happy place.
@ajreinhart Much of the angst seems to revolve around the #fediverse not being exactly like #birdsite either mechanically or socially. They seem to be striving to make it identical. I hope they will take the time to see the good in what was here before they arrived.
@ajreinhart thank you for this
I must remind myself to always ask, before posting...
What is my intention with this post?
How does thus intention align with and support my reasons for being here and who I am/trying to become?
Does this make me a better person?
If not, don't do it.
The other place incentivised harshness and nastiness...
Must not let that happen.
Must unlearn be certain behaviours...
@ajreinhart Most social media sites, wherever they may be, attract trolls and bad actors. Just hoping this place is better at dealing with it than others.
@ajreinhart Great point. Thanks. Much of “the birdsite” is being weaponized I’m afraid. Some type of PTSD is real I’d bet.
