The problem with the Fediverse right now isn't technological, or even scale. 🧵

It's knowledge onboarding.

Most performance problems with the Fediverse would dissipate if the bulk of users would go to small instance or self-host themselves.

Instead, they go to big instances under the mistaken impression that:

1. Big instances have better performance -- nope!
2. Big instances give them better reach and discoverability -- nope!
3. Bigger instances are better maintained -- nope!

@atomicpoet isn’t it a problem that moving to smaller instances without limiting the people that you follow to mostly that instance as well would constitute a problem for these smaller instances?
@Yoast How?
@atomicpoet Because the small servers will also pull all the messages of people that everyone follows on other instances on that instance, so it can be shown in the federated timeline.
