Something new for #UnsocialSpectators 1999 episode. Revisiting #Spaced
One of my favorite TV shows. I own it in different Region codes because there is different commentary. Discovered Edgar Wright thru this show and have been a fan ever since.
@clay_harrison Spaced is so, so, so good. I need to rewatch sometime soon. It's been a while.
@billturner I love watching early Edgar Wright. The pilot has so many great storytelling tricks. It’s hard to imagine Nick frost hadn’t acted before this.
@clay_harrison Agreed that Nick Frost does so well as a first-time actor. I haven't seen all of Wright's work, but Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz are my favorites. Sadly I haven't seen his more recent films at all. I need to remedy that.
@billturner Scott Pilgrim?
@clay_harrison I've only seen bits and pieces of it, sadly. Never the full film. I should. Especially since I did read and enjoy the comic!
@billturner you should check it out for Edgar’s work and the snapshot of early Hollywood like Aubrey Plaza and Brie Larsen. It’s great in a theater if you get a chance to see it, it’s great. And dude, Baby Driver is his best movie. I swear by it. Haven’t seen Soho yet.

@clay_harrison I'll make it a point to see it. I had no idea Aubrey Plaza and Brie Larsen were in it! It was a great comic with a wild premise. Just never saw the film.. although I'm positive I suggested my kids watch it, because I thought they'd get a kick out of it.

And I definitely want to see Baby Driver as well. It looked like it had a lot of the humor and feel of his earlier work.

@billturner both have great soundtracks. What tabletop stuff are you working on? I’ve been getting into some games and trying to create my own.

@clay_harrison I've really become enamored with solo "journaling" RPGs, as creative writing exercises. I haven't played full RPGs (D&D, etc) in DECADES, but I'm interested to start again.

However, solo RPGs prompt you to stretch your imagination, often building a world/characters from nothing.

@clay_harrison Right now, I'm working on a few based on postmodern novels from the 70s. Once I get something prepared enough, I'd be happy to let you know and send details to you, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

What are you working on?

@clay_harrison I can also point out some other solo role playing games, or even general RPGs if you have an interest.

I'll confess I'm more of a consumer, rather than a player, of RPGs at the moment, but there is so much creativity out there in this space. D&D is the most popular for sure, but that's just the tip of the iceberg!

@billturner I discovered solo play just a few years ago. Then I joined a Pathfinder 2e game. Tried Magic. Tried DiceMasters. I just wanted a solo game and started making my own. Now I’m reading into more game design. Trying to make a card game and also trying to make a game board for RPGs. One that came be randomized for encounters and played solo or add boards for team play.
@billturner and i dig the Micro RPG system and the themes of their games. https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/publisher/9707/micro-rpg
DriveThruRPG

@billturner I just finished playing this solo. Loved it.

The Lost Expedition

Lead your intrepid explorers deep into the deadly jungle in your quest for El Dorado.

BoardGameGeek

@clay_harrison I've come close to picking that game up several times, but never have. I've played quite a few boardgames solo, although only a few are truly solo-only. I've sold off a bit of my BG collection in the last year. Just don't have as much of a passion for them as I had.

I have the MicroRPG rulebook, but have yet to get a game in. I do like how many variants they've created with the system, though. My favorite along that line is Four Against Darkness (solo RPG/dungeon crawler).

@billturner well I’m stuck at home so I’ve been looking for solo games. That’s what got me trying to develop a game. I’ve developed bone spurs on my spine. I’ve had 3 kidney stones in the past 3 years. My dad was exposed to Agent Orange and I’ve suffered from it since I was born. Anyhow, my wife looks for solo games at her work. Half Price Books. Brought home this Human Era. Played it? She can borrow them so I test drive them.

@clay_harrison damn that's rough, Clay. Sorry to hear you're dealing with all that. Hopefully things can start turning around. I've lost a bit of my interest in board games, but solo rpgs give me a bit of a break, or escape.

I like the journaling kind since they're more often creative writing exercises, and I've been wanting to do more of that the last few years. A couple of good, simple ones are "Alone among the stars" and "Quill".

@billturner I dig Neon Road. A post apocalyptic 80s wasteland with malls and mega cities with Mad Max wasteland between the cities. I have yet to play but created a spreadsheet for characters with buffs and weapon bonus auto calculate. I checked out the Four After Darkness. Added Four Against the Great Old Ones to my wish list.
@clay_harrison I'll have to look this and Human Era up. I haven't heard of them, but, oh boy, there are so many out there! I haven't played Four Against the Old Ones, but it's supposed to be pretty good. 4 Against Darkness has a large number of expansion/character/dungeon books for sale to add a bit of variety if you want it.
@billturner yea I’d like to read them. What novels?
@clay_harrison the books are "Invisible Cities" and "If on a winter's night a traveler" by Italo Calvino. I'm more going to use themes and such from the books for prompts in a creative writing/journaling rpg. No real adventure, but more a creative exercise. But either way, they're both favorite books of mine.
