I've only really been a Mastodon guy for less than a year, so I can hardly call myself an oldbie. But my personal opinion about the influx of new members these past couple weeks is that it rocks. Love seeing lots of fresh enthusiasm for the platform, love seeing the thoughtful discussion of its drawbacks and downsides too. Good job, good posts team

I've seen some "eternal september" griping from some long-time users but mostly just enthusiasm and interesting stuff

"Eternal September" for those who don't know the term:

In the early 90s, there'd be a huge influx of new Internet users from universities every September. Some older users would gripe about how these new users wouldn't always understand the lingo, ettiqute, or functionality.

Then, around 1993, Internet access became more broadly available, so the influx of new users was no longer intermittent, but consistent and permanent.

Hence, "Eternal September".

@tom I recall the expression being specifically about Usenet, not the wider internet. Does that sound right?
