Good advice for folks running open Mastodon instances in the US, regarding DMCA registration.

Doing this early isn't too much work or cost, but will avoid *much* more costly (time and $) problems later, especially if you have a large general-purpose and open instance https://twitter.com/rahaeli/status/1593819064161665024

“Hey, US folks newly running Mastodon instances: do Future You a *huge* favor, mitigate your potential liability, and register with the copyright office and designate an agent to receive DMCA reports *right now*. https://t.co/HTPtaCYGBh”

@Pwnallthethings I feel like the open-source world as a whole, maybe even the whole Internet, is very brazen about copyright. To be fair, suing an open-source project or a middle-class small website admin is bad PR as well as unprofitable, but that's no guarantee it won't happen. Especially if Mastodon instances have no legal representation, unlike the big open-source projects.
