I will add that this post is getting some boosts, and I am not feeling anxious about it because I know the admins of the instance I'm on (wandering.shop) absolutely will ban and defederate as needed. And that's a new and nice feeling as compared to the birdsite.

Since this post is getting some more boosts, I thought it might be a good time to mention that this holds true for racists, ableists, homophobes, and the like.

ZERO TOLERANCE FOR HATE.

Specifically and especially hate for people who are marginalized in society.

Mastodon can be great, but it can also suck, and it's up to us - and our admins - to pick the correct path.

@Didi What do you recommend for the more respectable ones? Watch and wait? I noticed one who has signed up, and the instance she chose doesn't allow any discriminatory behaviour on the basis of gender identity. So far she's following the rules.

@Didi Yes, I'm familiar with that. Just wondering about what specific steps to take.

@lisae As a user or as an admin? As a user, you block and if their in your server you let the admins know. If they don't ban them, you find a new server.

As an admin, if they're in your instance, you ban them. If they're in another one, you let the admins know. If they do nothing, you defederate. Absolute zero tolerance for people who live for hate.

@Didi I'm a user and they're not on my server. I've been checking their feed daily to check if there is anything to report. Just wondered if there was a way I could be more proactive.

@lisae Tell your admins. If they're unresponsive, find a new server.

@Didi My admins have already blocked a user and defederated from spinster on my advice so they're good. I just want to be able to build a good case for this person and so far that's difficult. I'll see how I go.

@lisae "They are a terf" is all the case you should need.

@Didi I had a couple virulent, disgusting TERFs bombing me with “groomer” shit when I first joined a couple weeks ago. My instance mods took care of them quickly, but not before a couple of horrible days. Also no clue why the were targeting me (gay dude, trans-ally, but not trans myself), but that “groomer” shit hits me HARD as a queer and all I can say is that in my particular case, mastodon worked. Fingers crossed it continues to work for others.

@toddo I fear we're gonna see the G word used more and more for all queer folks.

@smollestbunny While the ideology is fascistic, many terfs view and/or present themselves as progressives. And they're the ones that could cause unwary admins to say "well, they seem ok."

@bigMouthCommie I appreciate the optimism, but they can't harass trans folks from their massively defederated server. They'll look for alternatives.
