A few thoughts on mastodon:

*Retoot often.* The mastodon network is sparse. Many folks are new, and finding each other is complicated. If you see something you like, retoot it. You are the suggestion algorithm. Everyone benefits.

*Follow liberally.* We’re accustomed to timelines crammed with ads and unwanted posts. Even if you followed the same number of people as elsewhere, you’d see much less content on mastodon. So follow liberally; everything is more with friends.

@_ds such a good point. On mastodon, you are the algorithm. Help your followers find the good stuff!
@trisweb @_ds “On Mastodon you are the algorithm.” That’s quotable!
@trisweb @_ds let some time pass and this will change too:(

@_ds Also, *DO* favourite, even though many people say it doesn't "help".

It let's the Tooter know their toots are being seen. In other words, it helps.

Maybe "favourite" should be reworded to "I see you!"

@_ds I will proceed to repost to all of my zero followers. Hope it makes a difference 🥂
@ErinRVM @_ds gave you a follow. Your boosts will go somewhere now 😂
@kyrickyoung @ErinRVM i’m not actually sure! i assumed that it went to everyone following you.
@ErinRVM You now have a follower!
@_ds I find both of those add up to an atmosphere of generosity here that I am really enjoying.
@_ds
Invaluable advice, Dustin, and although it won’t reach many, I’ve reblogged it per your suggestion.
@_ds does a boost go to my instance? Or only my followers?
@_ds 👍 Suggest adding tags like #MastodonTips (on mobile so hard to type or I'd add more)
@_ds I think this is good advice. I’m also trying to reply to people’s content more often since I was a big quote-poster in the other place and I’m told that’s frowned upon here. 😊
@_ds I can’t even find out intuitively how to follow someone - I wish there would be better UI here…
@_ds The only caveat I would give to this is for those of us who are “feed completionists,” i.e. those of us who read every post in our feed. I’ve had to unfollow (or bury in a list) people who boost a ton, because it makes my feed unmanageable. I hate for “X posts per day” to be my threshold, but an unread feed gives me an irrational amount of bother/low-level stress.
