one view could be karma, the Hindu version not the other version. another could be psychological compensatory mechanisms, like you said, a sort of self-hurt. another could be a traumatized nervous system that's susceptible to being preyed upon by unscrupulous people. I think there are many ways to look at why we fall into destructive relationships.
