Mastodon.lol is expensive to operate -- we've got servers, outbound email, translation, media storage, backup storage, monitoring. We're entirely community funded so if you're in a position to financially support the site please consider it!

We don't have ads, we don't track you or sell your data, we don't charge for features, and we don't even get paid to run it. All Patreon donations go towards operational costs, nothing more.

Patreon

@nathan You're getting a lot of love on this toot. If your aim is to assure people that subscription income always goes to operation costs, would you be willing to expose what percent of costs are being covered?

Also, what's your plan if incoming money from Patreon outpaces your operational costs?

@tehraven Our Patreon has covered all the operational costs for almost 2 years. There's always been a buffer to ensure the site stays online and is future proof. That's why we need the support, the buffer also decreases as users go back to Twitter, choose a different server, their financial situation changes, etc. So yes, there is overflow, but having that is super important.

@nathan I totally get that, I more mean that some light visibility into that ebb and flow would create a feeling of transparency that people (like myself) want to see. I know the patreon page is showing much much total monthly is coming in, but I would like to know where the operation cost line is.

Also people who give a $5 sub could be aware that it's not *needed* right now, and thus they could save that for another month.

Appreciate the effort you put in here!
