First stop, unplanned. I saw a goose, and travelling with a birder meant we had to stop to check it out. "Just" a greylag, not one of the hoped-for Cape Barren local population.

In the background: kei te moe a Mounga Taranaki i roto i tōnā korowai i te ata nei.

Next stop, Tataraimaka Beach/Oakura Beach to see the wreck of the Gairloch, nearly 100 years old.
Not quite #SouthTaranaki yet, but on our way!

Because we are recently transplanted Aucklanders, the next stop is for coffee.

Lemon curd muffin optional.

#SouthTaranaki adventure break

Next stop on our #SouthTaranaki adventure is finally in South Taranaki!
The Cape Egmont lighthouse is worth a stop.
Taking our time to walk along the coast and admire the flowers
#SouthTaranaki
Lunch at the Sugar Juice cafe in Ōpunake, where there is a secret outdoor dining area, across from where you can pretend to race Peter Snell. #SouthTaranaki

Then a wander past the surfboard wall in Ōpunake - which one of us looks more like a surfer?

#SouthTaranaki adventures

Just past the surfboard wall is the clifftop garden.

A wander through there before retiring to the Māwhero Studio for a tea and an art project. Guesses where we got our inspiration?

#SouthTaranaki adventure

Next stop? The beach, of course! Out to Koupokonui for some driftwood construction, cool-looking-rock hunting...
Still at Kaupokonui...birding (so many gannets!), and a run down the dunes. Oh, and of course, ice cream from the camp store (along with cleaning sand out of shoes, a summertime must-do).
#SouthTaranaki adventure

Our final outbound stop is the King Edward Park in Hawera. We found Wendy, had an insect race, traipsed through a beautiful rose garden, and pretended to be pirates. Not shown: us reciting horrid poetry to each other through the "sound mirrors". You'll have to visit yourself to figure out what that means

This #SouthTaranaki adventure has been awesome!!

Now for the drive home around the other side of the mountain.

Place bets now whether Mr Zizabeph falls asleep in the passenger seat

We made it home to Ngāmotu (New Plymouth)!
An awesome day out.

Coming soon: how you, too, can have an adventure like this without having to do any planning.

A friend of mine has created a bunch of these day trips and they'll soon be available to download

Watch this space 🤩

It's live! Now you, too can have a beautiful day out in #SouthTaranaki, stopping at cool places, with fun things to do, and you don't even need to plan it! The work's all been done for you.
