A longer definition: Earth became essentially uninhabitable, so humans cobbled together the Exodus Fleet and set out, unready but having to go. Then rebuilt human culture on the way.

One of Sir pTerry's regular themes was 'Old Gods do new jobs" and how they transform roles based on their devotees convictions.. so, aptly named given the etymology.
