Hi, Mastodon.

@hollyoreilly Good Evening. A friend of @flexghost is certainly worthy of a follow.

Cheers!

@hollyoreilly @CoachMark if you like her now…wait until you see her cookies.

Don’t go there with it, creep.

@flexghost @hollyoreilly I would normally use a Cookie Monster GIF here, but I don't think you can use GIFs via the laptop. So a Cookie emoji will have to do.🍪
@hollyoreilly Hi Holly! Welcome in! It's not as hard to figure out as people on Twitter are saying.
@hollyoreilly hi! I also do not understand Mastodon. LIke at all.
@hollyoreilly Welcome to a strange, new world 🌏
@hollyoreilly Welcome. A strange new world to discover and figure out. It will no doubt be an adventure of sorts, but I have to say there is a pleasant vibe thus far…
@iamwahl Seems like a kinder, gentler Twitter?
@hollyoreilly of a sort…it seems to be more of a community/conversation—complete with identifiable leadership and rules-based governance, as well as a much greater transparency around those things. Instances post who is running them along with clear terms of use. One of the biggest problems with that other site is that, while there were (supposedly) rules of conduct, they were at best obtuse, and more likely nonexistent (or, at least, poorly enforced/applied)…

#MyNewHome
@hollyoreilly all my interactions have definitely been much more civil, so far, and I get the impression people would like to keep it that way. There are Instances in the Federverse that allow less civil speech, more disrespect, and outright bigotry/hate; but other Instances can, and often do, block or otherwise restrict access from those. People who have a desire/need to explore/monitor those realms can create an account on an Instance (or Instances) that allows those interactions.
@hollyoreilly hello. Trying to find friends from the twitt show. Followed each other there.
Welcome. I’m trying to figure this all out too.
@Jarhead80 @hollyoreilly Did you use one of the import tools to bring your followers over?
@jcheroske @Jarhead80 Oooh, there are import tools?

@hollyoreilly @Jarhead80 Yeah. There are several guides out there. The basic jist is that you'll go to an importer website. Then you'll authorize your Twitter account (login essentially) so the tool can see all your followers, follows, blocks, lists, etc. Then you'll pick what accounts you want to try and import (e.g. your follows). The tool will search those Twitter accts looking for Mastodon handles in the profiles and will write a CSV file that you then download. Then you go into the Mastodon web interface and find the import section within your profile settings. You'll upload that CSV and bingo, you've got a bunch of new follows. I had about 1100 follows on the other site, and over 100 are here, so pretty good I think. You can rerun the tool every few days to grab any people that have signed up in the meantime. Tell people to come over here, and tell them to put their handle in their Twitter profile.

@hollyoreilly Hi Holly, good to see you and excited about your chocolates!
@JillianMHurley Hey! I'm kind of getting the hang of this, but yeah, chocolates take about 90% of my time these days. I don't know what to do with all of these characters!!
@hollyoreilly you’ll find something. You are the best wordsmith I have ever run across. ❤️
@hollyoreilly sure not nearly as robust as twitter - I mean, we can’t gif. This is everyone’s 2nd language 😕 so we’re here to just chat as if it were AOL ? 😮‍💨

@Markstephenlevy NO GIFS? WTF I'm out.

JK.

@hollyoreilly right? I had to take a screen shot of my favorite I’m out gif !

@hollyoreilly hello Holly. I follow you in the bird place - so it’s good to see a familiar face here now.
@hollyoreilly hi! I just bought a couple of things from your store 😁
