@maxplanckgesellschaft reminds me of how (I think) human vision works: our brains use a preconscious filter to ignore a huge amount of information in our visual field, to allow our conscious brain to focus on a tiny subset of relevant data, so we're not overwhelmed.
This works but occasionally the filter prevents us seeing things literally in front of our face, or we see what we expect to see even when it isn't there.
So critical ignoring is necessary but we should be aware of possible issues.
