#NMD is an RNA degradation pathway that should be taken into account whenever we look at transcripts reaching the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. Especially if those transcripts do not have an obvious coding part. Short, randomly present open reading frames are perfectly capable of troubling ribosomes and trigger #RNAdegradation through NMD (#lncRNAs, I'm looking at you).
