The latest Mastodon update lets you follow hashtags. When you follow, posts with a tag appear in your timeline automatically.

Try following #Gardening to make posts about gardening appear in your timeline.

This can be REALLY useful for discovering interesting accounts.

To follow a hashtag:
1. Log in through your server's website
2. Search for hashtag
3. Click it to see its results
4. Click on 👤+ icon in top right (click again to unfollow)

Posts from followed tags are visible in the apps too.

I'm just poking around on Mastodon, after recently signing up. So far, this account @feditips has lots of great tips for those of us just starting out. In fact, they have a site that walks you through most of the steps & questions you might have about using Mastodon: https://fedi.tips/

Under the advice of @Pwnallthethings I also used https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ to import over the Twitter accounts I follow & my Twitter lists.

I'm still not grasping how some posts work, since the thing I just posted didn't show up on my "Home" page", & I'm not sure why it then showed up when I clicked on my avi. Unclear who sees what posts. Or toots, or whatever you call them.

Also not sure how to "thread", which is what I'm trying to do, here, by hitting the "back-&-to-the-left-arrow" on my previous post, which opened a new window under the thing I just posted.

And I'm frustrated that you apparently can't quote-post, because on the bird app, I often QT an article or post, w my comments about it. It seems like Mastodon only allows replies or RTs.

Anyway, I'm hoping to get more time to tinker around on this site soon, especially since the bird app looks like it may collapse under mass-firings/resignations. For now, I'll primarily be on that hellsite watching it crash & burn.

Oh, also, I really hate hashtags, but apparently they're a big thing here. Did I read correctly that the only terms that are searchable here are ones that have been hashtagged? #blerg #whack #itstheyear2022everythingshouldbesearchablewithouthashtags

I must be missing something. My whole "thread" of posts didn't show up on my Home page, & only shows up as individual posts under my "posts & replies".

Looks like I need to do more reading about how to do the basics on here. #cantsomebodyjustexplainittomelikeima5yearold
