Every year around this time a farmer from a few villages away knocks on our door and asks for a time convenient to us for him to come round to trim the 5 holly trees that grow in the garden, his father and his grandfather did the same. He makes Christmas wreathes about 2000 on a good year. I refuse payment because I enjoy talking with him, he knows about the area far more than I.

@JevonCarey I love the gift economy of the countryside - it’s the same here too - a bit of help with paperwork/a turn out at 2am to help with a stuck lambing, some chips from a killed pig/an extra bit of grazing when it’s needed. It’s not barter it’s gift and it makes the world ‘right’
@JevonCarey this sounds like a great neighborly trade.
@JevonCarey
Wonderful, that's the way to go!

@JevonCarey gorgeous photo and story, lovely!
@JevonCarey those peonies are stunning 🥰
@JevonCarey Stunning picture and a lovely story. Thank you for sharing.
@JevonCarey
Great shot of the peonies. Like it very much!
@JevonCarey Barter economy! It’s one reason it’s better to be among the people who make or grow things and not just a consumer. I’ve been scrolling through your page and I’m enjoying all of your photos.
@alex_galt thanks Alex, that’s very kind of you
@JevonCarey That is a real sense of community and friendship you have with him and your photo of those peonies is beautiful.
