Boost this toot if you're planning on sticking around Mastodon whether or not it becomes more popular than the birdsite.

@JesseSkinner @Bdellar Actually, no

I am planning on sticking around (and will be deleting my birdsite account very soon)

But saying ‘boost if you X’ just feels like a holdover of birdsite-like behaviour, and an attempt to ‘go viral’ for the sake of it

(I have to admit that I boosted at first before realising I was being sucked into old patterns of behaviour. I don’t want to do that any more)

@transponderings @JesseSkinner @Bdellar using the favourite feature for this is better. It gives you the ability to show that you like it, but it doesn't spread it unnecessarily.

I've never really used twitter, but it appears that the boosting over there affects the algorithm since people outside your network may see the message. That would explain why people want it, because it increases the chance of a message going viral.

The boost feature on the Fediverse is much simpler. It simply shares the post with your followers. Nothing more, and nothing less. If that's what you want to do, then boost it. If you don't feel you want to bother your followers with it, then didn't boost it.

@loke @transponderings @JesseSkinner @Bdellar ...Okay Twitter is /weird/.
