@tobz @aotearoa_ben I think it would have to be a widget that opened a little form that asked for your instance.
It’s been so long since I used a retweet button - how did they work? Was it one click and done, or did you click through to Twitter and log in? Twitter was single instance software, so I suppose you logged in on first use of their widget and then you were logged in for ages…

If there was a gateway that every site used, then it'd remember you and you'd rarely be asked for the instance name. But that goes against the decentralised nature of Mastodon, so I think clunkiness is somewhat inherent.
