Depends on the client you use. Most have a search bar or magnifying glass on top or bottom.
There is no full text search, btw, only persons, hashtag and such. At the moment, this is by design.

Wait, are you using the webclient in Safari on your phone?
The search bar is hidden under the Hashtag-tab at the right side of the screen (#)
Like Twitter, it's easier to use one of the apps, though.
