Britain was a very wealthy island. It is now less wealthy, but in global terms still very wealthy. As it becomes progressively less wealthy we have to decide between more equity or less equity. Nicely encapsulated in the recent Trussonomics spasm - a clear vote by one end of the political spectrum for inequity as the way forward. We have to refocus on the issue of equity and not illusions of once again plundering (buccaneering?) the globe.
@torty_murray I agree. But the first step, the acceptance we will not be again what we once were, is needed before we can have that debate. Once we are easy in our national skin we can have the debates and discussions we need to have. The insistence on being world class and world beating etc just muddys the water and will not let us move on to a better place.
