Using this platform made me realise how I came to accept exposure to cruelty & hostility as part of the deal of being able to talk to you. The clicks algorithm is not necessarily our connection master. How refreshing to be reminded of that.
@nisreen Same. It’s amazing how much hostility I learned to tolerate. The algorithm has never been kind to me.
@nisreen We have been given a rare and wonderful opportunity to reset. To realise the things that we accepted, but never should, and reflect on the behaviours we ourselves can change. I think this is a really exciting and hopeful time.
@pwgtennant @nisreen We’ve got a lot of unpacking to do and some little things to fix here and there, but we’ll make this place home
@nisreen @ajadmon @pwgtennant Agreed! Thanks for pointing that out. I feel hopeful being here!
@nisreen Cruelty and hostility are never acceptable. It amazes me how doctors and professors have tolerated it.
@nisreen I go back to check in on Twitter now and it just feels aggressive and combative, even in small interactions. It’s like no one feels safe giving people the benefit of the doubt, so everyone is prickly and defensive.
@nisreen How beautifully put...I really feel this. May you experience lots of kindness.
@nisreen This is very true. Social media absolutely promotes controversy and cruelty for more engagement. Having a platform with no algorithm and with better, consistently enforced moderation has made a platform that is kinder and more genuine. It fosters community instead of outrage. Its genuinely amazing to witness.
@nisreen I thought my timeline was pretty toxic before I came here. After a week on Mastodon I realised just how bad it was.
@nisreen stepping away from Twitter and into the elephant app feels like a friendly hug for the battle-bruised.

@nisreen yes, so true! I talk to people and feel assured the chance of snark is close to zero. (Indeed, I haven't seen/heard any snark since I arrived 10 days ago.)

And yet, there is a significant number of people who are trying to duplicate their experience and posting habits from The Other Place. Hoping they will come to appreciate this different existence.

@nisreen your toot is eye opening and hopeful of the new lovely at the same time

@nisreen it sort of feels like social media group therapy.

Wait people post nice things about their hobbies? And no one becomes negative about it?
(seen some really good pictures some artists made and an awesome lego workshop)

@nisreen It slowly crept up on me and then it became normal. It draws you in as well and you start to behave badly. It's almost like design (algorithm?), to increase interaction.

People are not angry here and coming from somewhere else, there is an adjustment to be made.

Let's just hope that it stays calm and serene here.

@nisreen it is such a nicer experience on here, no abuse, no adverts, no stress.
@nisreen The quality of the experience here is so much higher.
@nisreen Couldn't agree more. I used to enjoy connecting with like minded people. But for years now I haven't even posted anything never mind responding. So far, this is a refreshing online environment!
@nisreen we have broken free from the almighty algorithm haven't we? The future is bright the future is Mastodon.

@nisreen that's interesting, as if it's better mentally for us to make our own connections and come to our own conclusions, rather than be force fed suggestion.

That could be said for a lot of things.

@nisreen good to see you here ❤

@nisreen I think the algorithm is like the boiling lobster. It was done over time so we didn’t realize what was happening.

I’ve said and I’ve heard other day that Mastodon/Counter Social feels like OG Twitter. Interaction is far more polite and productive when there isn’t a force driving conflict.

@nisreen well maybe things will be more grown up and nicer here🙏
@nisreen I know what you mean…
@nisreen I wish more of you medical/covid experts would make the move here. That is the only reason I haven't closed my Twitter account yet. You have all taken so much abuse on that platform. Thank you all for speaking the truth though despite the trolling & abuse. I'm sorry you had to experience that, it isn't right. Twitter is indeed a nasty place.
@nisreen so glad to hear the shift! you have weathered so much awfulness.
@nisreen hello! Lovely to see you here :))
@nisreen it's so lovely to have an "algorithm free" platform where we are given the space to interact with others in thoughtful ways rather than simply responding to nudges that will increase our time on the system.
@nisreen agree. But what's different? No algorithm? The lack of qoute tweets? The novelty of the platform for "newbies"? Being "federated"? Or a combination of things?
@nisreen Took an extended break from Twitter after the Brexit vote because I had been very much taught that "Twitter is bitter" and got the predictable recommendations to go back where I came from etc. Then I think I just...grew to expect it? It's relaxing to feel more like a Twitter 2008 vibe here. Civility!
@nisreen It's so nice not to be doom scrolling. I knew things were bad but I hadn't realised how bad until I came here. I can close the app and my jaw isn't clenched.
@nisreen What? I can have a civil conversation with a stranger, no way. It is like going into a museum and then remembering what it was like back then. Same feeling when the power goes out and the cell phone battery finally dies... you are stuck talking to each other. Even without Twitters pending crash, this was a good reminder that you can have an honest friendly community.
@nisreen same for me, from the first day I noticed the respect, the relative calm which are setting the best environment for exchange and mutual growth.
@nisreen Exactly this. Toxicity was built in and we absorbed it every time we went on that app. I didn’t even realise I was doing it. Here, positivity seems to be built in, I hope to absorb a lot of that instead.
@nisreen excellent reminder, thank you. I stayed mostly away from the blue bird just for that reason. Now stumbling through the Fediverse like a new (old) frontier, linking up through threads feels more organic, for now at least.

@nisreen @john I think about this a lot. These Twitter staff losing their jobs and garnering sympathy…

They made the whole world fight and be needlessly stressed / angry for money. Honestly they should be pariahs in business. It was a highly unethical company, it’s just dialled it up more since.

@nisreen Follow you on Twitter and saw some of the grief you had to put up with. Glad you’re here too
